Lifting performance by working to your natural strengths
We all need to take stock sometimes and look to the future … This is exactly what I did last week, with the help of a consultant. It’s a process I heartily recommend, because it can help guide you and your business in the right direction.
The Big Picture: is your business on track?
Like any functioning system, an organisation needs a health check from time to time. It’s easy to get bogged down in the day-to-day minutiae of running a business and lose sight of the big picture.
Leadership: managing the fallout of making unpopular decisions
There are very few leaders who would choose to make themselves unpopular with their team.
But sometimes, when tough decisions are required or difficult changes must be made in an organisation, the upshot can be that it ruffles feathers and takes people out of their comfort zones.
Test your leadership skills: explore new ways to lead
If you want to challenge your leadership skills (and any assumptions you have about your abilities), one of the best ways to stretch yourself as a leader, is outside the work environment.
This year, I coached a team of 13-year-old netballers. It proved to be a test of my leadership abilities, which caught me by surprise!
Two powerful words
Saying ‘Thank you’ can be such an affecting thing to do – whether it’s in a card, with a gift, or said face to face.
For leaders, especially when guiding their teams through times of change or upheaval, remembering to say thank you, goes a long way – especially if your staff are doing long hours and sacrificing time with their families.
Governance: Gender & Cultural Diversity on Boards
Women make up 50.85% of the New Zealand population but we are woefully under-represented in the country’s boardrooms.
Women make up only 25.9% of directors on private company boards and only seven companies nationally, have achieved gender equality.
Leadership & Performance: the importance of Role Models
When I’m coaching people new to leadership, or those looking for a style that can lift their performance, I encourage them to observe leaders who inspire or impress them.
If there’s a leader you admire, consider how they engage people and what you like about the way they operate.
Slideshow: Formulating & Communicating Your Vision & Strategy
Where is your business heading? That might sound like an obvious question, but it’s surprising how many business leaders can’t answer it in detail.
Reconnecting: Mental Health Awareness Week
I’m passionate about mental health because without it, none of us performs at our best.
This year, Mental Health Awareness Week (26 Sept – 2 Oct) is about reconnection: ‘Reconnect – with the people and places that lift you up to enhance your wellbeing – hei pikinga waiora.’
Walking the Talk – are you leading by example?
When it comes to the culture of an organisation and the performance of the people within it, the tone for both those things is set by the leadership.
You need to lead by example and demonstrate the behaviour you also expect from your team.
Progressing Your Career: Making Interactions Count
If you’re a leader wanting to progress your career, the interactions you have with key people need to leave a favourable impression.
That’s especially true if you interact with key senior leaders and/or influential figures, such as CEOs and global leaders.
Are Your Executives Disconnected From Your People?
Staying connected with your people is crucial for any leader, especially if your organisation is going through transformational change.
There’s nothing less motivating for staff than feeling disconnected from the executive team. It can suggest to them a lack of interest in their activities and welfare, or that their involvement isn’t valued.
Change Management: How Connected is Your Team?
Some of my business consulting work involves advising on how to approach and manage change. One of the most important ways to manage change, is to ensure the leadership/executive team is aware of and invested in the social capital of their organisation; the ties that bind all people involved, together.
Managing Poor Performers & Recognising Your Stars!
From time to time, most business leaders need to have difficult conversations with poor performers. I’ve touched on this before in my Blog, because many business owners and leaders find managing poor performance challenging or awkward.
Walking the Talk: Clarifying Goals to Instigate Change
I’ve been taking my own advice and thinking about changes I need to make for the future. When you’re doing that for yourself or your business, it can create some discomfort …
Does Your Business Need to Change?
If so, it’s easy to be impatient and expect instant results. But if there’s any hurrying to be done, it should be in getting change underway as soon as you realise it’s necessary.
Flexible Working & COVID-19 – a Change in Mindset
A recent tussle I had with COVID-19, emphasised the value of flexible work arrangements such as working from home, remote working and hybrid working.
Mentorship for Managers, Leaders & Executives
Mentors can be in many forms. Mentorship can be provided as a formal or informal relationship and mentors may come from within your company, or externally.
Knowing Your Business & Your Numbers
How well do you know your business? The answer to that question applies to everyone running a business and it’s probably the biggest gap in knowledge I come across in my business consulting work.
Elevate your career by embracing change
When I coach senior leaders who want to advance to the next level of their careers, we often talk about the need to ‘elevate’. It’s a concept worth knowing about, if you want to step up to a new role.
Does Your Leadership Team Meet Face-to-Face?
The working environment has evolved over the past couple of years, into a more flexible arrangement. For many, this has meant a big increase in time spent remote working/working from home…

Navigating the Future & Should You Put Prices Up
I love speaking to live audiences. A recent opportunity was speaking at one of the regular evenings Amplify (Taupo District Economic Development) hosts for local businesses.
Leadership Challenges of Flexible Working
The recent Microsoft work trends research for 2022 found that workers priorities have changed. I’d go further and say that leaders’ priorities have changed too.
How Well Do You Know Your Business?
There’s an old saying: ‘Keep the main thing, the main thing’. Or, as is generally attributed to Einstein: ‘The definition of stupidity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result’.
How Do You Encourage Your Creativity?
It’s very hard to come up with great ideas or think strategically when you’re head down, focusing on daily tasks…
